Frequently Asked Questions

  • Camm Design Co. is registered as an operational LLC business in the state of Oregon. Elizabeth Camm is an interior designer/architect, not a licensed architect, engineer or surveyor.

  • Interior designers/architects receive degrees in the field of interior architecture and/or are certified with a national certification board. Studies include space planning, safe occupancy and environments, ergonomics, accessibility, and national design standards and building codes. Elizabeth received an interior architecture degree from California State University, Sacramento. Their course description and certification can be found here: https://catalog.csus.edu/colleges/arts-letters/design/interior-design/

  • Any plans submitted for building permits must list all applicable codes. Federal, state and local building codes hold Elizabeth accountable. City or county government agencies will not allow the construction of any work not adhering to building codes. Elizabeth will only design to meet current building codes and building standards.

  • Any new residential building over 4,000 square feet of ground area, over 2 stories in height or over 20 feet in overall height.

  • If the scope of work falls within Oregon laws, hiring an interior designer/architect is more cost efficient than hiring a licensed architect. Elizabeth will design to standards and building codes the same way a licensed architect will. Elizabeth will work cohesively with engineers and consultants and will provide comprehensive floor plan drawings needed for permits and construction.

  • No, only licensed engineers with the state of Oregon can provide engineering calculations.

  • In remodeling, when existing walls are altered or removed, including adding enlarged windows and doors, increasing the square footage of the home, a new roof, a new deck above 30 inches in height, a new accessory structure attached to the existing structure, and/or a new foundation. In new construction, they are always needed.

  • Typically, designers and/or architects design the space and engineers provide the calculations needed to build safely. Elizabeth will provide the engineers with the floor plans in CAD files. The turnaround time and cost for engineering is considerably less when engineers only need to provide construction building details and calculations instead of a full set of plans.

  • When retaining walls, new drainage systems and/or grading and excavating the land are required.

  • When adding a HVAC system and/or fire sprinkler system for new home construction.

  • When boundary lines need to be marked and/or new dwelling units are built on land that has not previously been constructed on.
